An autumn treat

The persimon is sometimes called nispero here in Spain. This is confusing because they are actually different fruit. The nispero (or loquat as it is called in America) are small brown fruit with a stone whilst the persimons (or kaki) are bright orange with no stone.

Ripe persimons are crunchy in texture; slightly sweet with a taste which is a bit like a cross between a mango and a peach. They are high in fibre and antioxidants so are definitely good for you. Too many though can induce diarrhea!

Persimon fruit are ready from about mid October so you should be able to find them on the market and in the shops now.

They can be eaten raw or can be cooked. Although the skin can be eaten, persimons are normally peeled.

They are definitely worth trying.
