Hoping for a more cordial future

image036.jpgOn Saturday morning, all eleven city councillors from the present mandate in Bigastro received gold badges as a reward for their hard work over the last four years. Following the ceremony, which was commissioned by the mayor, Raúl Valerio Medina, the councillors signed the guest book as they would normally do at the end of a term of office.

The mayor thanked both the government team and the opposition and went on to say that "we must all work to improve the image of Bigastro, from the commitment and responsibility that comes with holding public office." Finally, the mayor requested a return of cordiality and mutual respect to the council chamber because as he said, “this is where you decide the future of all bigastrenses."

I think we would all share that view. As I have said before, the role of opposition is to oppose when they feel that is necessary and agree when they feel it is right to do so. However, by all accounts, the confrontations in the chamber in the recent past have gone beyond that and have become bitter. In my opinion, there is no excuse for bitterness in a council chamber, it is a place for reasoned debate. I think the whole town would agree with me that it would be better if our elected representatives spent their time and energy forging a future for the town rather than squabbling and bickering.
