January 1st just after midnight and most people in the region were clearing the grape pips from their mouths and washing the next glass of cava down their throats. In the meantime, robbers were breaking into the La Zenia branch of Caja Murcia setting off the alarm.
Two police patrols went to the scene to find the back door had been forced open and inside the bank, drawers had been ransacked. The thieves had left the tools they had used to gain entry behind so the police thought they had fled.
When they went outside, the officers spotted a man running away and so gave chase. As one officer jumped over a garden wall, he was hit hard on the head by one of the suspects who then ran away. The officer required hospital treatment for his wounds.
This tale reminded me of the sad story the Senior Admin. Officer at Anfield School told me one Christmas. She and her husband were shopping in Liverpool for presents for their children and had parked at Albert Dock. Loaded up with the first lot of parcels, they went back to the car to put them in the boot. They then carried on shopping.
When they later got back to the car park, they found the boot of the car had been forced open and all the presents taken. How do you explain that to your children?
