We've probably all witnessed guests putting towels on sunbeds before breakfast to secure a good sunbathing spot in hotels. Apparently the same thing applies to beaches where ardent sun worshipers go down to the beach early to stake their claim with an umbrella.
Not any more if the Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FVMP) has its way. In the new bylaws they have drawn up, people can be fined up to 750€ for trying to secure a good spot on the beach by this method.
Many councils will not adopt such extreme measures though.
The suggestion in hotels was to throw the towels from vacant beds into the pool but I never saw anybody do it. It would be risky to suggest throwing someone's sun umbrella into the sea. Perhaps just taking it down and placing it further back on the beach might be safer. If the people question what you have done, just tell them you've saved them a 750€ fine.
