Dog owners who take their pets onto beaches in Torrevieja face a 1,500-euro fine following the introduction of a tough new law. The town hall stated that the measure has been brought in for ‘health and safety’ reasons.
The dog fine is part of a wide-reaching municipal by-law designed to improve hygiene in public bathing areas.
The by-law also prohibits barbecues and fires on the beaches – except for the weekend of San Juan (this weekend) when residents can apply in writing to the town hall for permission.
Lucky-lucky salesmen also risk a 90-euro fine and fishermen have been told they cannot practice their sport within 100 metres of an area frequented by bathers. Fishermen who contravene will be fined between 60 and 1,202 euros.
Beach goers are also asked not to play ball games in areas where there are groups of sunbathers
