A fall in unemployment

March saw the first drop in unemployment during this month since 2009. There is still a long way to go; in the region there are still 59,125 registered as being out of work. Most of the jobs came in the services sector with only a handful in construction. Still it is a glimmer of hope.

One swallow does not a summer make, and while Senor No-Joy sits and plays his fiddle, the fires of the country still rage on with just 969,627 employment contracts being issued last month, down by 85,090, or 8.07 percent, compared to March 2012.

So although the number of people registered as unemployed fell by less than 5,000 last month (out of a population of 46,815,916 - See Wikipedia 2011 Census figures), on a year-on-year basis the number of registered unemployed actually rose by 284,376, or 5.99 %. There is still an incredible 5,030,000,000 people unlucky enough to be out of work with no end in prospect any time soon.
