The cost of shopping

The Coast Rider - a free English paper here on the Costa Blanca - conducts an annual survey of the cost of food shopping. The survey compares prices in the UK with those here in Spain.

As the article in the paper points out, this can be difficult because certain items that you buy in Britain are simply not available in Spanish supermarkets. They also point out that , although the cost of their shopping basket is considerably cheaper here in Spain, the poor exchange rate brings it more or less on par.

It is interesting to note that the survey found Mercadona to be the most competitive of the three Spanish supermarkets. Our own experience vindicates that result. In our opinion, Carrefour is just too big and busy - it takes too long to get round the place and Eroski is not much better. We prefer to shop at the Mercadona near San Luis where you can park easily and get round in about an hour. We shop to live not the other way round!
