A fishy tale

The fishing fleet at Torrevieja hauled in three times as many fish this September as they did in the same month last year. The Brotherhood of Fishermen in Torrevieja recorded catches of 963,650 kilos with a value of 619,474 Euros.

It is the blue fish, the melva (a species of tuna) which are filling the fishermen's nets. Surface feeding fish like the sardine and the boquerón ( the small species that are delicious either fried or in vinegar) are much less plentiful.

It isn't all good news though. As the catches get larger, the price at market drops so the fishermen have to work that much harder for the same money.

Que sera, sera.
