One of the words that cropped up in our lesson yesterday was 'leyenda'. We knew what it meant because we remembered the film "La leyenda de Zorro" (The Legend of Zorro) starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Our teacher, Eduardo asked if we knew the legend of Bigastro. Of course we didn't. He went on to explain that Bigastro existed as a settlement in 1701 with 16 families who rented land from the Cathedral in Orihuela.
The labourers who worked the land were very poor and starved. The legend of Bigastro was therefore one of robbers because the people had to resort to going out at night to steal food from the land or from the market in Orihuela to feed themselves.
