A total of 29 provinces in Spain are on alert as the hot air from Africa continues to move over the Iberian Peninsula bringing temperatures of 40 degrees C to many places.
Madrid, Toledo, Ciudad Real, Jaén and Córdoba are on orange alert; whilst Navarra, La Rioja, Zaragoza, Huesca, Teruel, Lleida, Tarragona, Valencia, Alicante, Murcia, Albacete, Cuenca, Guadalajara, Segovia, Ávila, Valladolid, Zamora, Ourense, Salamanca, Cáceres, Badajoz, Huelva, Sevilla and Cádiz are on yellow alert.
The Ministry of Health advises people to drink water or other fluids frequently; to only eat light meals; to protect themselves from the sun when outside; to use blinds to keep the sun out of the house in the middle of the day and to use ventilators or air conditioning to reduce temperatures indoors.
People are also warned to avoid the risk of wild fires especially in the countryside.
