When Rafa Lorente came to fix the new feet to our gazebo, he told me that this year there was a plague of rabbits in the countryside. Sadly the flesh is tough and strong in flavour so they are not the best source of meat for a paella. Rafa also told me there was a terrible problem with cockroaches as well .
In Orihuela, they have already had to deal with a plague of mosquitoes. Now they are set to deal with the rats and cockroaches that are thriving in the sewer system of the city. The aim is to reduce the rodent and cockroach population by 60% by using traps and chemicals.
The campaign to reduce these vermin will be in five stages. The first stage is happening now. The company responsible will then return in July, September, February and finally April next year to complete the task.
