This year 493 beaches and 78 ports in Spain have been awarded the blue flag status – 44 more than last year. That means that approximately one in six of the total of blue flag beaches are located in Spain.
Galicia is the community with the most blue flags (124), followed by Catalonia (108), Valencian Community (101), the Balearics (85), Andalusia (83), the Canary Islands (35), Murcia (16), Asturias (12), Basque Country (3) and Ceuta and Melilla (two for each of them).
In terms of length of blue flag beach; Andalusia heads the list, with 119 kilometers, the Valencian Community is next with 91.6 km and Catalonia third with 84.3 km.
So there are plenty of first class beaches to explore this year. Plenty of spaces to place your towel and take in a bit of sun. No need to sit on top of each other as they do at Bournemouth.
