Black day for Brown

Yesterday must have been "el día peor" for Gordon Brown's as his party suffered their biggest electoral defeat in 40 years. The Labour Party find themselves in third place in terms of percentage of votes with a meagre 24%.

The Labour party are now suggesting that Ken Livingstone will loose the London mayoralty to Boris Johnson later today. Ken Livingstone has been London's Mayor since the post was created in 2000. For the first four years he was an Independent candidate until he was re-admitted to the Labour Party in 2004.

In the Wirral ,where we used to live, there is still a hung council; 24 Conservative, 21 Labour, 20 Lib Dems and 1 other. The last party to hold control in the Wirral was Labour at the turn of the century.

In Liverpool, Labour gained 3 seats from the Lib Dems. which meant that the Lib Dems but lost overall control. The last time that Labour had control in Liverpool was 1996. Since then the Council has been under Lib Dem control. NB There are no Conservative Councillors in Liverpool.

I don't think even Tony Blair could put "spin" on these results.
