El Belén de Bigastro

Most towns in Spain will create a Belén for Christmas. In its basic form it is the nativity scene with Jesus, Mary, Joseph, Gabriel and perhaps a few animals.

In more elaborate Belénes you will find a variety of scenes from Bethlehem complete with figures, buildings, trees etc. Some of the vegetation will be in the form of models but often there will be live plants. Some of the cameos include lighting and even movement. There is often smoke coming from chimneys and fires.

IMG_0224These creations takes months of planning and preparation and are well worth visiting. The one in Torrevieja is outside in the main town square by the Imaculada church. In Bigastro it is inside the Hall next to the church.

Last night, the Belén was open so we took the opportunity to go inside to take photographs.
