Many thanks first of all go to Raúl Valerio Medina and the members of the Socialist party in Bigastro for taking time out on a lovely Sunday morning to come up to Villas Andrea to talk to us. And of course a big thank you to those of you who took the trouble to go up to La Pedrera to listen to him.
Although Raúl had an interpreter with him, he hardly needed her help to understand and speak to us in very clear English. His English puts our Spanish to shame.
Unlike towns like Torrevieja, Guardamar and San Fulgencio where there are a lot of Brits, we form just a small part of the community which made it all the more impressive that Raúl and his party should go to all this trouble on our behalf.
First impressions count: Instead of hiding behind a table, Raúl positioned himself amongst the audience and thus connected directly with us – that was very astute.
Once the meeting started, Raúl went on to answer even the most tricky questions with confidence, honesty and clarity and avoided making false promises that he knew he couldn't keep. In my opinion, Raúl presented himself as a man who is passionate about his town and is prepared to work damn hard to make it succeed. He knows that there are huge problems to overcome but with his young and energetic team, he his prepared to be creative and find solutions.
Maybe I am showing my bias here, but I was very impressed with both his manner and what he said. It will take a lot of persuasion for me to vote for anyone else.
