The Mayor, Antonio Ángel Hurtado, revealed yesterday the most ambitious plan for a Commercial Park which he says will be located between the present sports zone and the Alicante-Cartagena motorway in Almoradi. In doing so he has stolen the march from towns like Algorfa and Dolores who had similar plans but have not made progress with them.
Hurtado explained that there are 300,000 people who live within a ten to fifteen minutes car journey of the proposed development which he says will palliate the effects of the economic crisis in both the Vega Baja and the regions as a whole.
The area allocated in the Plan General de Ordenación Urbana (PGOU), has a surface of 578,000 square metres in which the town plans to build a Commercial Park, a hotel zone, great public parks and the last phase of the Sport City.
Besides the stores, this ambitious infrastructure will have leisure zones, 3,500 parking places and a four star hotel with up to 90 rooms. The hotel will house a convention centre, banqueting halls with a capacity for up to 1,000 people, a spa, a gymnasium, a swimming pool and ample parking.
The Mayor anticipates that the project will create 1,300 jobs in its construction will then generate long term employment for 1,500 in the area.
The aim is to have the 120 million euro project completed by Christmas 2010.
Nobody could accuse this man of lacking ambition.
