An alarming bill

Telefónica sent José Ruiz Frutos a 9,019 euro bill for 14,976 calls made on a mobile phone in one month. The 100 page bill was for September 2007.

José had been convinced by his friend  to install an alarm in his house with a mobile phone connection to a security company. The system would use the phone  to make a call to  the company when it triggered an alert. The security company would then phone José to let him know.

José was happy that all was well with the system because he hadn't received a call from the security company The phone was therefore put onto a contract to avoid the problem of it running out of credit.

The security company say that they hadn't received calls from the phone and yet, according to Telefónica, the calls were made.

José has been in touch with Telefónica and although the person he spoke to said it was obviously an error, he still gets demands which have become increasingly threatening in tone. Telefónica have since passed the case on to their debt collecting agency to deal with and José is on the black list for credit.
