Several of the proprietors of the beach houses alongside the playa Babilonia that were demolished by the Servicio Provincial de Costas in Spring received bills for this year's IBI (council tax) from SUMA.
After several phone calls and letters to the Ayuntamiento in Guardamar, their only reply has been a second bill with a 20% surcharge added on. At the most, these people would have expected a bill for part of the year - two and a half months.
What is infuriating the ex homeowners most is that they had diligently paid their taxes along with their water and electricity bills. Ten years ago, they even paid 38,000 pesetas each to have the obsolete lampposts replaced
In March they had to watch their houses torn to the ground as the town reclaimed the sea front for the benefit of the citizens.
To insist that they pay any tax seems unfair given the circumstances. It is like adding insult to injury.
