End of an era

José Joaquín Moya Esquiva resigned his position as mayor and councilman yesterday before making his declaration to the court in Orihuela . Following his declaration, Moya was committed to prison pending further investigations by the judge dean of Orihuela, Natividad Navarrese.

Moya was transferred handcuffed to the Plaza Santa Lucia at ten am yesterday morning. The case was then heard at 5pm and lasted 3 hours.

Moya was kept in gaol at the local police station in Orihuela last night and will be transferred to the gaol in Fontcalent today.

The other four that had been arrested were released but have to report each month to the court whilst the investigation proceeds.

Jose Joaquin Moya is accused of a city-planning operation that began with the exchange of premises measuring 150 square metres on Calle Purisima for 1,600 square metres of land in the green zone Apatel. It was also agreed that the council should pay 192,000€ in two payments (I hope my translation here is correct).

The green zone land would then be reclassified as industrial ground without modification to the General Plan of Urban Arrangement. The property on Calle Purisima would be auctioned off as a location for a restaurant.

The industrialist paid 30 euros per square mere for the land he acquired ( 48,080€ in total) and after constructing the four industrial units then sold them for 1 million euros.
