The title will mean absolutely nothing to my Spanish readers.
Tomorrow night is bonfire night and although you may not get to see a bonfire here in Spain that shouldn't stop you enjoying some traditional Bonfire Night fare.
What would be more appropriate than Yorkshire Parkin
(I apologise that the quantities are in old money)
Ingredients (can be doubled for a large cake)
4oz self raising flour
4oz fine or medium oatmeal
4oz soft brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground ginger
4oz black treacle
2oz margarine
About 5 tablespoons of milk
1 beaten egg
Grease a suitable square tin and put some greaseproof
paper at the bottom so that it is easier to remove.
Mix all the dry ingredients together.
Warm the treacle in a pan with the butter and milk
Add to the dry ingredients when melted with the egg and beat very well.
Pour into the tin and bake for about 50 minutes in a preheated oven at Gas
Mark 3 (not at the top or it will burn on top). Cut into squares when cold
and store in a tin. Keeps well.
For my Spanish readers:
On November 5th, we celebrate the famous failure of Guy Fawkes to blowup the Houses of Parliament in 1605. Guy Fawkes was of course a Yorkshireman.
Throughout England, people will build bonfires and set off fireworks. On top of the bonfire will be an effigy of Guy Fawkes which the children will have taken round the streets the week before asking people for "a penny for the guy".
Traditional fare for the night includes parkin and treacle toffee along with potatoes which are wrapped in foil and then baked in the bonfire.
