Appeal for mayor's release

Jose Joaquin Moya, the mayor of Bigastro, arrived at Fontcalent prison yesterday after spending four days in the Local Police gaols in Orihuela.

He is apparently in a delicate state of health and needed help getting to the van which took him to Fontcalent.

Apart from the state of his health, Moya's lawyer, José Sánchez Alarcos, will be requesting the release of his client based on three points:-

  • Moya has not been convicted of any crime as yet.
  • Moya has not shown any inclination to elude justice.
  • And, most important, it is impossible to believe that giving him freedom would allow him to interrupt the enquiry when he has already had to attend two registries, one at his own address and the second in his office as Mayor.

Whether Moya is released from prison or not is up to the public prosecutor Felipe Briones.
