Different names for different dwellings

Eduardo explained to us the different names that are used for dwellings in Spain

  • casa - a house of any type
  • villa - often used to describe a casa but more properly describes a small town or group of houses
  • bungalow - a house on one level
  • chalet - a house that could be in the country or on a mountain or by the the beach
  • adosado - a semi detached house (there is no Spanish name for the popular quad houses)
  • hilera de casas adosadas - a terrace of houses
  • duplex - one house on top of another
  • piso - a large apartment
  • apartamento - a smaller form of piso - a flat
  • ático - top floor apartment in a block of flats - the penthouse
  • casa rural - a house in the country
  • finca - a farm with a casa 
  • chabola - a shanty house - there's apparently a district in Madrid which is composed of these
  • casa cueva - a cave house cut into a mountain - usually a cheap form of housing
  • caseta - is a hut or a stand at an exhibition or the dugout at a football stadium or even a dog kennel
