It isn’t a competition

Why is it, that when there is a heat wave in Britain, some of the tabloids have to revel in the fact that temperatures there are higher than in the Costas? I quote, “Lee-on-Solent in Hampshire was the hottest spot for the second day running, eclipsing Barcelona with temperatures of 27.2°C .”

You never read in the Spanish press, “temperatures in Alicante higher than those in Skegness”. What would be the point? It isn’t a competition. In any case ,when you read on, the item in the Sun says, “But cooler temperatures are predicted later this week”.

We get bad weather here –that is a fact. We get torrential rain, high winds and thunderstorms; even snow if you travel inland. In July and August though, it is hot. From about the end of May through to October the weather is almost guaranteed to be pleasant.

We don’t have one or two days of sun followed by a week of cold weather at this time of year. Once you are into shorts and T-shirts for summer, you stay in shorts and T-shirts until Autumn.
